HOSPITAL BOARDS
MAXIMUM STATE AID.
(Per United Press Association.)
Palmerston North, June 11.
That the Consolidated Fund could not come to the assistance financially of hospital boards any more than it was doing at present is ' the reply of the Minister of Health (Sir "Alexander Young) to a request by the Pohangina County Council that it should do so. The Minister stated that the proposal had been carefully considered on previous occasions, but it had been held that there were insufficient grounds justifying an increase in the contribution. Under the present arrangement the Government contributed on an equal basis with local bodies, and in view of the relative measure of administrative control as between hospital boards and the department, the Consolidated Fund bore an adequate proportion of hospital board requirements. In any case the present difficulties of the Treasury rendered it impossible to consider the question of an increase.
