SALE OF WORK. (From Our Correspondent.) The members of the Young Ladies Guild, associated with the Presbyterian Church held their annual sale of work in the Sunday Schoo’. Hall, when the financial returns were very satisfactory, totalling close on £23. During the afternoon several pianoforte solos were rendered by Miss May Robertson (South Riverton) which were greatly appreciated by the many present. The stalls were well laden with a varied assortment of articles, and these were readily sold. The following ladies were in charge of the stalls: —Fancy work, Misses M. Robertson and L. Helm; cakes and produce, Misses V. Cassels and B. McNaughton; flowers, Miss E. Tweedie; tea rooms, Misses A. McNaughton, Armstrong, M. Galloway, R. Cassels, P. Bailey. Borough Rates. At the last meeting of the borough council the clerk in submitting the estimated receipts and expenditure for the year ending March 31, 1935, stated that the estimated receipts, including publicans’, wholesale and auctioneers’ licenses, etc., totalled £1258. On the expenditure side, £l5 had been placed there as the Mayor’s honorarium, but during the many years Dr. N. G. Trotter had occupied the position of chief citizen he had declined to accept any monetary return for his services and the money had been absorbed for other purposes. Referring to the rates the clerk stated that he thought no increase would be necessary, and said that a general rate of twopence in the £ on the unimproved rateable value of property within the borough; a hospital and charitable aid rate of three-farthings; a similar rate for lighting; a half-penny to provide for payment of interest and sinking fund on loans of £4500; one penny farthing for payment of interest ana sinking fund for Aparima bridge, and threefarthing rate for the gasworks loan would be sufficient for their requirements for the year. Councillors expressed their satisfaction at the clerk's remarks, one member stating that a report had gained currency than an increase in the rates had been contemplated this year.Obituary. Word was received here on Friday of the death at Clyde (Otago Central) of Mrs M. D. Clark in her 94th year.' The late Mrs Clark will be well re-

membered by the older residents of the town and district Arriving in Riverton with her husband and young family from the West Coast over 60 years ago, her late husband commenced business as a baker in premises adjoining the mill site in Palmerston street. Her husband shortly afterwards passed away, and his widow carried on the business herself. Later she removed across the street securing the premises then known as the old Caledonian Hotel and carried on a bakery and grocery business for many years. The old building having, outlived its usefulness was demolished, and a modern brick one erected close by. Here for many years Mrs Clark, with her father (the late Mr J. Young), and her four sons—Messrs George, Duncan, John and William—carried on a large town and country trade. She eventually decided to sell out arid take up a fruit farm in Otago Central, and removed to Clyde some years back, remaining there to the end. During her many years’ residence at the seaside, Mrs Clark was held in the highest esteem for her many sterling qualities, and her kindness and consideration to families in distress. A cheerful giver she loyally supported any movement having for its object the betterment of the community, she also took a keen interest in church matters, and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She leaves three well-known sons to mourn their loss, viz., Messrs George and William (Clyde) and Duncan (Dunedin). The other son, (John), passing away a few years back. The remains were interred in the Riverton cemetery on Monday, a large number from far and near being present to pay their last mark of respect to the departed. Basketball. The following are the local-basketball results for the week:— Riverton A 19 v. Colac 5; Fairfax A 23 v. Riverton B 19; Otautau 22 v. Riverton C 5; Pahia 22 v. Fairfax B 6; Waipango a bye. Football. Despite the heavy rain on Saturday afternoon a large attendance was present on the recreation ground to witness the senior contest between Ohai and Riverton. The visitors arrived late and fielded fourteen men, while the home team started with twelve, but this number was increased to fourteen before the game had been very long in progress. The climatic conditions were against anything like a good display, and it was resolved to play two short spells, change directly over at half-time and continue until the finish. The home team had the best of the game, although Ohai put up a good defence, but failed to score. The final result was: Riverton eleven points, Ohai nil. Tries were obtained by Collis, Lockett converting, and by Parker and J. McKay. For Riverton: Lockett (2), Collis, Southern, J. McKay, Cleaver, Dodds, Keeler, Marshall, Bickley, and Parker played prominently, while Murray, Nicol, and Harding were the pick of the visitors. Mr A. Z. Mills was referee.
