ANTI-WAR MEETINGS MR GERALD GRIFFIN’S VISIT REQUEST DECLINED The City Council at its meeting last evening declined to grant the request of the Invercargill Anti-War and AntiFascist Council to hold open-air meetings at the Post Office rotunda from Sunday, June 16 to Sunday, June 23, when Mr Gerald Griffin, of Wellington would be conducting a campaign against war and Fascism. In connection with the request the inspector of police reported: “I am not in favour of the application to hold such public meetings.- There are plenty of halls available for the purpose. “I move that we give permission, said Councillor W. M. C. Denham, “I don’t see why they should not have the right to express their views on war?’ “War’s all right, not the other business,” said Councillor J. H. Tattersfield. “The police object to-open-air meetings,” remarked the Mayor. “Why do the police object? asked Councillor Denham. “That’s their business,” replied the Mavor. “Oh! They shouldn’t be stopped,” said Councillor Denham. “I support Councillor Denham if Mr Griffin will give an undertaking not to talk Communism,” said Councillor A. W. Jones, “I understand hes pretty harmless. We shouldn’t muzzle, him if he keeps within decent bounds. “I don’t think meetings should be held on Sunday night,” said Councillor G. J. Reed. . ~ , „ Councillor H. Ritchie moved an amendment that the request be declined, this being seconded by Councillor W. G. Tait. . The amendment was earned.
