"Trading throughout the year has still been difficult, although less so than during the previous year, and shareholders will doubtless derive satisfaction from the strong financial position as disclosed by the company’s balancesheet,” said the acting-chairman, Mr T. Simson, at the annual meeting of the shareholders in Wilson’s Portland Cement Company. “At our last annual meeting Sir George Elliot mentioned that sales had been the lowest for some years, but he believed the

bottom of the hill had been reached and the company might hope) for a, h steady ascent, said Mr Simson. “It is gratifying to report that this hope has been realized. Although the increase is not large, it has been steady, and the indications for the coming year are quite assuring, Apart from the great efforts being made by governmental and local bodies to relieve unemployment and bring about confidence, and to increase trading by providing for works of a permanent nature many companies and private individuals are contemplating new buildings. This should result in greater demands for the products and services, not only of- the cement industry, but also of all allied industries.” The works laboratory was well equipped and staffed and the high quality of the company’s product had been fully maintained. Plant and equipment had been well maintained although the mill had been running at reduced capacity. New developments were continually taking place in cement machinery and methods of manufacture. The payment of a final dividend of 7| per cent, per share and a bonus of per cent, per share, making 13f per cent, for the year, was agreed to. LONDON MEAT QUOTATIONS. The New Zealand Meat Producers Board has received the following cable from its London office, dated June 7, advising that the following are the approximate average prices realized for the week, based on actual transactions of wholesale quantities of the descriptions of meat mentioned, and are for representative parcels of the goods offering during the week, being for business done on the basis of delivered to Smithfield market, and/or ex London stores. Beef Market: Affected by low prices Argentine chilled beef. N.Z. Porker Pigs: Market dull and poor demand. N.Z. Baconer Pigs: Market quiet and unchanged. In regard to the published prices realized for New Zealand lamb delivered to Smithfield Market; the New Zealand Meat Producers Board supplies the following table, giving the equivalent New Zealand parity, after deducting all costs, including selling commission. The costing is based on Saturday’s estimated skin values and includes exchange at current rates. The calculation is on the basis of a prime woolly lamb weighing, say 341bs delivered at freezing works:— If Price Delivered N.Z. “overall” parity to Smithfield is: Delivered at works (approximately) (d. per lb) (d. per lb) V 7 7.59 6 1 7.44 6t 7.29 Note: In the above estimate the cost of killing, freezing, and placing on board steamer is based on a charge of ,575 d per lb. BORING AT WAIPORI. BRITISH FIRM'S ACTIVITIES. If the present activities of an English business firm, British Developments, Ltd, are successful there is a probability that Waipori, which , was the scene of extensive gold mining many years ago, will, within a year or two, regain at least some of its former glory. Prospecting has recently been carried out, and as the area is under the control of the Dunedin City Corporation, application has been made for prospecting rights. The Electric Power and Lighting Committee will recommend to the council on Monday night that applications be granted, under certain conditions, and safeguards. Inquiries disclose that the applications made by the company are connected with the proposed construction of an alluvial gold dredge to work an area of about 1000 acres. One boring machine has been working on the sight for the last six weeks, and it is intended to put other machines into operation shortly. The scheme is still in its early stages, and will only be proceeded with if the results of the boring operations are satisfactory.
