FARMERS’ UNION.

The monthly meeting of the Aparima branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday evening, when Mr J. M. Ayton, president, occupied the chair. A general discussion ensued on interruptions during meetings and the rent charge for the supper room, and it was resolved to write to the Town Board asking that this be reduced, and also that they be granted more privacy. It was resolved that the following remit be forwarded to the executive: “That the executive of the Farmers’ Union urge the wholesale merchants to keep a full stock of English goods.” Messrs J. M. Ayton, H. C. Pullar and J. H. Beck submitted a comprehensive report on the 11 business conducted at the recent conference. Badminton.

The Riverton A badminton team played a friendly match with Otautau on Friday evening. Each side was four sets, but" Otautau won by 23 points. Combined Doubles—Miss Stroud and F. James v. Miss Dickson and Father Henley, 15—5, 15—6; Miss F. Chilton and H. Macpherson v. Miss MacDougall and J. J. Banks, 2—15, 15—12, 10—15; Miss M. Porteous and E. Silverwood v. Miss M. McKinnon and de Clifford, 15—7, 9—15, 14—15; Miss Duncan and R. Sutherland v. Miss W. McKinnon and M. P. Lyng 12—15, 15—14, 15 g. Oddfellows’ Ball. The fifth annual ball conducted by the Loyal Otautau Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F.. was held in the Town Hall on Monday evening, and proved a most successful function from every point of view. The building was beautifully decorated with streamers, and the committee, with N.G. Bro. A. James at the head, and Sister McCulloch _ and Bro. A. White as joint secretaries, had everything running smoothly. There was a large attendance, visitors being present from all parts of Southland, while representatives of lodges were present from Invercargill, Dunedin, Winton, Nightcaps and Dipton. Music was supplied by the Troubadours’ orchestra, and extras were played by Mr R. H. Sutherland. The duties of M.C. vzere carried out by Bros. A. James, F. C. Beer and A. T. Norman. The lodge circle was formed at a convenient interval, and after N.G. Bro. A. James had proposed the toast of “The King, P.P.G.M. Bro. R. McKenzie responded to the toast of “Hearts of Oak, St. George, and Shamrock, Rose and Thistle Lodges, Invercargill. 1 ’ He thanked the members of the' local lodge for the invitation to be present. The speaker urged everyone present to link up with some friendly society, as they were a benefit to everyone connected with them. He could assure the local brethren that the visitors from Invercargill had enjoyed themselves, and on their behalf he thanked them for the hospitality extended. In responding to the toast of Loyal Winton, Loyal Nightcaps, and Loyal Dipton Lodges,” PP.G.M. Bro. C. Stenhouse said the country lodges looked forward to this function, which was always successful, and this year it was no exception. He congratulated the committee on the excellent arrangements, and stated that it was due to its untiring efforts that everything had gone with a swing. , P G Bro. Dickinson responded to the toast of “Princess Mary and Hand and Heart Lodges, Dunedin,” and thanked the members of the local lodge for the hospitality extended. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss Burdon (Invercargill) and Mr H. Smyth, jun. General. The last two ladies’ button competitions on the local, golf links have been won by Mrs G. Sinclair. Mr Alex Low selected the sheep for his father (Mr G. Low, Bayswater), which were entered for the Dunedin Winter Show. Out of eight entries he gained six first awards, one second and one third. In one class m which he had three entries, he secured first, second and third. The most points prize for fat sheep at the Southland Winter Show was also won by Mr G. Low. 1
