DAZZLING HOCKEY

INDIANS v. OTAGO. VISITORS’ 17-NIL WIN. (Per United PreS's Association.) Dunedin, June 8. Hockey of a type entirely unknown to the Dunedin public was seen at Carisbrook yesterday afternoon when the touring Indian team defeated Otago by 17 goals to nil. Six of these goals came in the first half when the visitors did not appear to be extending themselves and they added a further 11 in the second spell. Otago came within scoring range, and, indeed, almost scored several times, but they had difficulty in finishing off their movements and found the Indian defence too strong. It was the effortless ease with which the visitors played that attracted the admiration of the crowd of about 10,000 that witnessed the match. Hardhitting they rarely indulged in and the long pass was practically absent. Remarkable ’stickwork, combined with almost faultless positional play and short quick-passing movements, gave the Indians their superiority. Although outclassed, the Otago team did not disgrace itself, good work being done by Dey on the right wing and Hore and Ward in the halves. Dhyan Chand, Rup Singh, Fernandes and Shahbuddin were prominent in the Indian team whose strength lay more in the forwards and halves than in the Goals were scored by Dhyan Chand (6), Wells (3), Rup Singh (5) and Shahbuddin (3). - HEALTHY STIMULUS PROFIT AT MANAWATU (Per United Press Association.). Palmerston North, June 8. In recognition of the stimulus given to hockey in Manawatu as the result of the Indian team’s visit, and in sympathy with the Baluchistan earthquake sufferers, the Manawatu Hockey Association donated five guineas to the Earthquake Relief Fund.
