PIPING COMPETITIONS

TO-DAY’S GATHERING.

LARGE ENTRIES RECEIVED.

The second annual gathering of the Invercargill Piping Competitions Society to be held to-day in Victoria Hall promises to be successful in every way. A total of 98 entries has been received, and the prize money has been increased by £22 10/-. The judges, Messrs S. R. Craig, of Owaka, A. S. Duncan, of Tapanui, and R. C. Sutherland, of Invercargill, will give their points independently, this method having been approved and adopted by the clan associations of Scotland.

Because of the large number of entries for each class the committee has decided to start the morning session at 9 o’clock. By mid-day the youths and class C marches, together with the class B slow inarches will have been judged. In the afternoon the class A pipers will be heard in slow marches. Before the commencement of the evening competitions, the society’s patron, Mr J. L. McG. Watson, will give a short address, after which his Worship the Mayor, Mr John Miller,, will welcome the visiting competitors. At the close of the competitions Mr Watson will present the cups and medals to the winners. The committee is very gratified at the excellent entries that have been received. In the class A events, open to the best pipers of New Zealand, the entries for pibrochs, slow marches, marches, strathspeys and reels total 34. Thirty pipers have signified their intention of entering the three events in class B for semi-amateurs. For the youths’ marches 13 entries have, been handed to the secretary, while 21 are entering for the class C marches. The most outstanding competitors to-day are as follows:—John A. Cameron (Mataura), Murdoch Watson (Makarewa), C. C. Selby (Invercargill), James MacArthur (Ohai), Kenneth Cameron (Dunedin), William Budge (Dunedin), William J. Milne (Dunedin), Archie MacMillan (Dunedin), Norman Stratton (Dunedin), Roderick MacKenzio (Mosglelj and George M. Robertson (Tinwaltt). ‘
