DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB. (From Our Correspondent.) The bright sun made shooting conditions extremely difficult when the Mataura Defence Rifle Club held the final shoot for the season on the range last Saturday. There was a gratifying attendance and in the shoot over 600 yards 15 shots for a cup donated by Mr Charles W. Goodwin keen competition was evinced, Rifleman J. Davis proving the winner with a 64, closely followed up by Rifleman A. 0. Ross and W. Webb with a useful 63. Rifleman R. C Barclay annexed the Parker Cup with 538, next in order being Rifleman W. Webb and J. Dobbs with 526 each. In the cup competition donated by the R.S.A., Rifleman W. McGowan’s aggregate of 389 made him the successful shot, Rifleman W. Webb taking second place with 382. In the club championship shoot a tie resulted between president B. V. Ross and Rifleman W. Webb with 568, Rifleman A. O. Ross’ card being 563 and Rifleman V. McGowan third with 560. In the shoot-off the president was succcessful with 22 against Rifleman Webb’s 20. The following are the individual scores with handicaps in parentheses: Goodwin Trophy.

There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the local branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held in the Oddfellows Hall on Thursday afternoon, Mrs W. L. Scott presiding. Following routine business the president introduced Dr. Woodhouse, who gave a very interesting talk on keeping fit, and at the conclusion was accorded a hearty vote of thanks at the indication of Mrs Scott. An acceptable vocal solo was rendered by Miss White, following which the following awards were made for competitions held during the afternoon. Raspberry jam: Mrs W. Pryde 1, Miss M. Thompson 2. Shortbread: Mrs W. Folster 1. Written competiton: Mrs C. H. Hargest. Final arrangements were then made in connection with the forthcoming annual ball, and before dispersing tea was served. Lodge Meeting. N.G. Bro. G. Henry presided over an attendance of twenty members at the fortnightly and installation meeting of the Loyal Mataura Falls Lodge Manchester Unity, Independent Order of Oddfellows (No. 7616). It was decided that the lodge, enter for the J. T. Veitch Memorial Shield competition. The principal business was the election and installation of the officers for the ensuing six months, the duties of installing master being carried out by D.G.M. Bro. J. Wilson, who was assisted by several past grands. The following were installed: G.M., Bro. G. Henry; N.G., Bro. R. McVicar; V.G., Bro. B. Craig; Warden, Bro. W. Brown; I. Bro. F. Richardson; Chaplain, Bro. A. Richardson; Left Conductor, P.G. Bro. G. F. Cameron; Right Conductor, P.G. Bro. A. B. Sutherland; E.G., Bro. M. Sutherland. Subsequently the newly elected officers were addressed by the installing master and each returned thanks. Prior to the adult meeting some fifteen members of that lodge visited the Juvenile Branch, which was presided over by N.G. Bro. Thomas Clarke.
