CITY OF MELBOURNE
CENTENARY CELEBRATED.
100 YEARS OF PROGRESS.
(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 8.0 p.m.) Melbourne, June 7. The culmination of Victoria’s Centenary celebrations began to-day when the hundredth anniversary of the landing of John Batman, founder of Melbourne, was celebrated. A special meeting of the City Council was held when for the first time in history the councillors wore the picturesque Windsor uniforms. The speeches expressed pride at the honourable and progressive record for a hundred years, and urged adequate town planning measures to meet the requirements of the future. It is expected that in the next hundred years Melbourne will have three million people. The council meeting was attended by the Governor, the Premier and members of Parliament. A civic luncheon followed.
The proceedings will end to-morrow with a pageant, procession, choral ceremony and fireworks.
