Although irrigation was practised 4000 years before the birth of Christ, it is only in very recent years that there has been any really marked development of the science, Mr G. H. Holford told members of the executive of the Canterbury Progress League on Wednesday evening in a brief survey of irrigation experiments in New Zealand (states the Press). Mr Holford showed some interesting graphs .and charts dealing with rainfall and irrigation areas in New Zealand and other parts of the world, one of these showing that the world’s irrigated areas in 1920 totalled 100,000,000 acres, while in 1933 the total area was 200,000,000 acres. He said that the Government’s recent pronouncements on irrigation experiments were satisfactory to those who had the interest of the schemes at heart. It needed only another spell of two or three dry seasons finally to convince the conservative farming community of the benefits to be obtained from irrigation.
