The Spider

Chapter 11.

“Jimmy!” exclaimed Gwenneth joyfully. “How on earth did you get here?”

“Same way as you did,” he returned with a grin. ‘Come, there’s no time to waste now. We must get well away from here by daylight. Come.” He took her hand and, together they glided through the trees. After they had gone some distance Jimmy spoke in a low, tense whisper. Speaking, rapidly he quickly outlined his escape. He had, it appeared seen her escape. He had wondered why the Indian girl had dismissed the guards. There was, he said, a loop hole in the wall of the hut in which he was imprisoned. He had seen Gwenneth go into the bush and when he was free he had followed her and thus they had met.

The moon was shining brightly now though the air was very sultry and oppressive. Suddenly Gwenneth’s quick eyes caught the gleam of steel amongst the long, sodden undergrowth. She pounced on it. “My revolver,” she exclaimed in a low, excited whisper. "Loaded, too! Here’s luck. Have you any cartridges Jimmy? They didn’t take mine.” “Nor mine,” he returned. “They took my revolver though.” Gwenneth laughed softly. “I was lucky enough to drop mine.” The small piece of good fortune had made her spirits go up with a bound. They glided on. “It feels awfully like a storm, the sky is clouding over,” said Jimmy suddenly. As he spoke, the moon was suddenly obscured by a cloud, and they were plunged in inky darkness.
