COMMENTS. You will never write well if you avoid difficult subjects, and attempt only the easy ones. Actually “One Hundred Years Hence” should offer plenty of scope'for your imagination, shouldn’t it? The chief difficulty lies to look far enough ahead. One cousin wrote: “wireless and telephones will be introduced into many homes.” That could be said of present day life, couldn’t it? Cousin Joan Holmes sent in a particularly good dntry. Again, I am very pleased with all the cousins who attempted this subject. 339th COMPETITION. Poem for all Cousins: “The First Crocus.” Prizes of 1/- to Cousins Chrissie Ross (16), 24 Lockend street, Tainui, Dunedin E. 1., Isobel McKenzie (13), Dipton and Patricia Summers (15), Orepuki. Very Highly Commended: 3 marks to Cousins Joan Holmes (14), 78 Albany street, Dunedin N. 1., Keith Deal (11), 53 Mitchell street. Highly Commended: 2 marks to Cousins Joyce Howden (9), Mataura Island, Jeanette Moore (11), 231 Gala street, Constance Lloyd (11), Section 5, Glencoe R.D., Ruth Heath (12), Lilburn, Tuatapere, Ronald Deal (9), 53 Mitchell street, Sylvia Scott (14), Queenstown, and Lilian Todd (15), Toa. Cousin Rita Smith will receive 2 marks for her poem if she sends it to me again and remembers to put her age on it. This applies to Cousin June Rees, who sent me a very good poem, neatly written, but did not mark it “my own work” or “original.” COMMENTS. The poems were good, my dears. Cousin Chrissie makes use of effective figures of speech. I think she should try to introduce “unexpected” rhymes into her verse, words which would make the reader sit back and say, “That’s good. I would not have thought of rhyming those two words.” Joyce Howden writes well for her age, but she should notice that “brown” and “around” are not rhymes. 346th COMPETITION. Poem for Cousins 13 and over: 'Smoke Screens.”
