Surprise Party

A surprise party visited the home of Mr and Mrs H. A. Carnegie, Ness Street recently when a number of relations and friends of Mrs E. Smith gathered to celebrate her 80th birthday. The evening was spent in songs, dancing and music. Musical items were given by Messrs Ernie Smith (grandson), and H. Carnegie; songs by Mr A. Carnegie and Miss Addie Carnegie; Highland and tap dances by Gracie, Addie and Etta Carnegie, and a recitation by Master Donald ' Carnegie. A beautiful birthday cake made and presented by Mrs A. F. Waters, Waikiwi, to Mrs Smith was then cut. Mr H. Carnegie, on behalf of the company, wished Mrs Smith very many happy returns of the day, after which supper was served. The guest received many beautiful presents and letters and telegrams of congratulation. When the function concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” Mrs Eric Baird thanked the company for their good wishes to her grandmother.
