HARRIERS

ST.

PAUL’S CLUB.

To-day the St. Paul’s Harrier Club run siarts from the St. Stephen’s Sunday School Hall, Waikiwi. All those likely to go to Dunedin next week must be present, as this will be their final run together before the race. It is pleasing to see the team men so keen this year. The closer competition for places is probably the reason. Last week-end’s outing was a great success, and most of the visitors went away, sorry that it was over. It will not be possible to repeat it next yeai' as the holiday will fall in the middle of the week; The paper chase on Monday morning saw a pack of over forty out and four clubs were represented. We would liked to have seen five. An excellent trail was laid and false trails provided both amusement and hard running. A good pace was maintained aIL the way, despite the very heavy nature of the ground. The runners were divided into teams of three, not necessarily of all one club, the winning team consisting of Cargill Road, Invercargill and St. Paul’s men. Most of the groups kept well together as can be seen from the fact that the first five teams had all their men in the first twenty. A tea in the evening before the visitors departed brought the week-end to a successful conclusion. Next Saturday the club will be represented for the first time in the Edmond Cup steeplechase. As this event is run over the Wingatui racecourse, the hilly country round Dunedin will make no difference and the club run-

ners should be considerably better off than they were in' the cross-country championship. The team will consist of the following ten: A. Hind, R. Woods, M. von Tunzelman, B. McAlister, A. Stevens, J. Henry, H. Dunlop, E. Dorman, R. Clarke, J. Walker, N. Dorman and R. Petrie. The trip will probably be done in the one day. INVERCARGILL CLUB. The most noticeable and pleasing feature of last Saturday’s run was the large number of new members. One of the foundation members of the club remarked that he began to feel like a stranger, there being so many new Of the new men, three were in places in the rim-in and the veterans will have to look to their laurels if they intend to retain their prestige.-Perhaps the best performance was put up by A. Imbs, who, out for his first run, ran into second place in the fast pack; he runs very nicely too. Jimmy Cross, a junior, had to be hunted out of the fast pack and had his reyenge on the club captain by leading the slow pack home with 50 yards to spare. Les Hinkley, another new man, ran into second place in the junior pack. 1 It was a pleasure to. see V. Grenfell out again. He has been resting after an operation and had his first try-out on Saturday. He elected to run with the fast pack and finished on well. Of the veterans, B. Crowther was the most outstanding performer. Just how far this runner would go if he took the game seriously is hard to estimate. His is a natural, easy-moving style which appears to be entirely effortless and if he trained systematically it • is safe to say he would be well to the front among the best men of Otago and Southland.

Taken all in all, last Saturday’s outing presented a most encouraging outlook and there is much room for optimism as to the outcome of the season’s activities.

Comment on the day would not be complete without expressing appreciation of the action of Mr T. Marshall, caretaker of the Southland racecourse, in placing dressing-rooms at the disposal of the members. This cheery official is a good friend of the harrier sport and does all in his power to assist the committee whenever the occasion arises.

To-day the pack will run from the residence of Mr and Mrs W. Torrance, 109 St. Andrews street, North Invercargill. It is anticipated that there will be a large and enthusiastic turn-out for this run.
