With only a few weeks before the commencement of the local amateur cycling season intending “anklers” are getting down to serious training. A number of the older hands have not caught the “bug” yet, but will be on the road before long. Although the local club is starting a few weeks earlier this season, northern clubs commenced activities some weeks ago. It is a pity that the local club does not make an effort to start on par with northern clubs. The prizes this year for open events have been made more attractive. They are: Races under 30 miles, first 15/-, second 7/6, fastest time 7/6; over 30 miles, first 21/-, second 12/6, fastest time 12/6. As previously open orders will be given to the value of the placing. ~ , Next Tuesday evening an open Club meeting will be held at the club rooms at 7.30 p.m. Members are requested to make a point of returning the envelopes issued some time ago.

GENERAL NOTES. Frank Grose, New Zealand representative at the Overseas Games, is spelling at present, but will be competing at an early date. The Dunedin Club has a number of promising new members who gave a creditable account of themselves m last Saturday’s event. It will be interesting to see how the local club’s new members will fare in the club’s opening event. This week’s Hint—Rust. This tip not only removes rust but prevents it. First, to remove it, dont use emery paper—-it only scratches the “hills” on the surface. .Instead smear on some sweet oil; rub it well in and then leave it for 48 hours. Afterwards powder some unslaked lime. and rub the rusty surface until it disappears. Now to prevent rust; mix one part of fat oil varnish and five parts of highly rectified spirits of turpentine. Apply with a sponge and allow to dry. You will never again be troubled with rust. If two coats of this preparation are applied underneath the rim tape it will prolong the life of the rim, tape and inner tube.
