ENGINEERING SCHOOL

AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY. THREATENED WITH EXTINCTION. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, June 6. In order to save the engineering school at Auckland University College which is threatened with extinction at the end of the year, further efforts are being made throughout the province to raise an endowment fund of £20,000 which is required unless the school is to close. As a result of his activities during the past six months Mr S. Irwin Crookes, a member of the University College Council to whom the task of ' raising thd necessary money had been delegated, hag obtained promises of varying amounts totalling £6OOO. The staff of the school is under six months’ notice. Efforts are now being made to have the Government’s decision reversed and h conference with the present Minister of Education has been arranged and will be held as soon as the Minister visits Auckland. He was expected to confer here with the educational authorities at the end of last month, but his visit was postponed. Advice of the date of his visit on educational matters is now awaited.
