RIOTS IN ITALY

REPORTS HELD TO BE UNTRUE.

CONSUL’S STATEMENT.

(Per United Press Association.)

Wellington, June 6.

The Consul for Italy, Signor G. Formichella, drew attention to a London cablegram dated May 29 giving an extract from the Manchester Guardian, which reported anti-Fascist demonstrations in Italy led by workers .and students, a strike of sulphur miners ’at Caltanisetta and other demonstrations by soldiers and the public in some Italian cities against war. Another message of the same date reported that the Abyssinian campaign was unpopuar with thousands of Italian families who were indignant that their sons had been sent to Abyssinia. Signor Formichella says: “I have full authority from my Government to state that the above quoted news is utterly untrue and mischievous. The Italians, both men and women, who gave full proof of their loyalty and devotion during the Great War, are proud of their Fascist regeneration and are now more than ever united under the colours and ready for any sacrifice for the motherland.”
