WHIPPET NOTES

(By “Oteramika.”)

The meeting held by the Invercargill Club on June 3 was a successful one in every way. . One of the visiting owners from Dunedin, Mr F. Tanner, secured a cup with King Pin and will have happy recollections of the meeting. A pleasing feature was the success secured by Mr J. Burrowes with Rosetta (Improvers and Lightweight) and Loretta (Maiden Hurdles). Loretta in particular had previously raced very well, but always seemed to be unlucky enough to meet something just a shade better on the day. This bitch outjumped the field in the Maiden Hurdles and should go on to better things as she has plenty of pace on the flat. Flying Shadow was not widely fancied for the cup, but after he won his heat in effortless style his outright win in the final did not come as a surprise. Happy Days was the popular selection and he finished second after getting a good start. He appeared to tire over the final bit.

King Pin was successful in the King George Handicap and secured a popular victory for a visiting owner. Dainty Dinah was second in this event. She is one of the most consistent whippets racing in Southland at present. Tolan, the well-grown son of Fleet aer and Minoru, annexed the exid Nursery in fine style and looks like taking high rank at an early age. Overproof was second and Mickey Mouse third. It is rumoured that Tolan has been sold to a Dunedin owner who wishes to find an outstanding juvenile to race further north.

The Open Hurdles provided a fine contest and Bonnette, who is at last displaying her old brilliance, was just beaten on the post by Flying Shadow with Warhaven close up just ahead of Lady G., who will find it very hard to win from her present mark. The puppy race was an exceptionally fine contest as five of the pups finished in line. Gold Gleam, racing in the nomination of Maitland and Johnstone, was a little above the rest and he won as his track work promised. Gay Song, Beadinwell, Margaret Bell, Trix be Good and Tipperary Boy all ran well and showed no inclination to play by the way. Only the judge could place first and second. The whole field ranked as descendants of Fleet Pepper and all raced honestly. The weather was fine and as the grounds committee had been putting in valuable work the track was in excellent order.

The next meeting will be held at an early date as the puppy owners are very keen to fight the race out over again.
