WAIANIWA NOTES

FARMERS’ UNION SOCIAL.

The Farmers’ Union held a most successful social in the hall on Saturday night. Mr Pickford showed three reels of the beauty spots of New Zealand and Mr W. J. Polson, president of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union gave a short address.

Messrs Wilson and Brown contributed solos and Miss Wilson was the accompanist, Mr D. McPherson acting as chairman. After supper was served the hall was cleared for dancing, music being supplied by the Bell Bird Orchestra. Mr D. King carried out the duties of M.C. Amongst those present were: Mr and Mrs J. Young, Mr and Mrs G. Young, Mr and Mrs J. Brown, Mr and Mrs A. Ronald, Mr and Mrs Dawson (Otahuti), Mr and Mrs T. Brown, Mr and Mrs Keith, Mr and Mrs Townsend, Mr and Mrs W. McKay, Mr and Mrs T. Miller, Mr and Mrs Ewart, Mr and Mrs R. T. McNaughton; Mesdames Bruland, King, Smith; Misses M. King, I. and R. Cartwright, T. and R. Ronald, E. Bruland, M. Bissett, O. Forrest, M. Young, B. and T. Stevenson, M. Smith; Messrs P. and D. King, I. Robertson, H. Smythies, D. Whitelaw, R. and M. McNeil, T. Steans, R. Couchman, A. and E. Grieve, F. Hill, M. Ronald, N. Green, D. Price, T. Bissett, D. Atkinson, G. McNatty, H. Fields (Makarewa), A. Jesperston, P. Campbell, D. Johnston (Drummond), C. Dillon and many others. The newly-formed Badminton Club held its opening in the hall on Friday night when a large attendance was present. Before declaring the court open Mr Mason, president of the club, welcomed all those present and wished the club a prosperous season. Later in the evening four Invercargill players, Messrs McCallum, Strang, Baird and Boyd, gave an exhibition of the game. Mr Strang also spoke to the local players on the rules and regulations of the game. It is intended to play two nights a week. { . ■Hie hall committee held its fortnightly 500 tournament in the hall on Saturday night, a fair attendance being present. Prizes were won by Miss M. Young and Mr H. Williams.
