HEDGEHOPE ROADS.
To the Editor. Sir, —From time to time I notice in your paper discussions amongst various bodies regarding the' upkeep of our roads. A few years ago it was a recognized fact that as soon as one entered Southland the superior road was in evidence. Alas! the complete opposite exists now: we are in many places possessed of the Dominion’s worst. One of the busiest roads in Southland is the Winton-Gore road; this runs through Browns, Hedgehope, and Glencoe. For bumps and troughs and general disrepair this road just about holds the Southland championship. Even “a rattling” good car finds life very hard on it. Now and again, it must be on the county chairman’s birthday or some such event, a grader makes a rowdy and triumphal trip through the district and we natives almost proclaim a holiday. The road also across the flat from Hedgehope towards Mabel Bush is in a shocking mess. Most of the surface was destroyed a few weeks ago when we had a rather big flood, but nothing has been done to put it in order. It is no earthly use having one man with a shovel trying to keep these roads in order. Before trying to put down expensive concrete highways on the road to pleasure resorts, let the county do something for the everyday user. If we have a representative from these parts on the Countv Council why does he not get something done.—l am, etc., SHAKEN-UP.
