KENNINGTON NOTES

THE LIBRARY. (From Our Correspondent.) Amongst some of the new books purchased by the library committee last month were: “The Individualist,” Sir Philip Gibbs; “The Proper Place,” O. Douglas; “Gyfford of Weare,” Jeffery Farnol; “Beauvallet,” Georgette Heyer; “The Painted Veil,” Somerset Maugham. A Petition. A petition to the County Council is being circulated amongst those concerned asking the council to shift the bridge on Oteramika road to a position several chains east of its present position, also to cut a new channel for the Puni Creek to pass under the bridge angling the road, the new channel would then be in line with the remainder of the creek. As it is at present the bridge and the creek cross the road at right angles so that after heavy rain the water banks up and prevents the draining of the surrounding country; also the heavy pressure of water at the bridge has several times forced itself behind the bridge sheathing and so scoured out the road which is at times dangerous and causes inconvenience to the travelling public until such times as repairs are effected. The proposed alteration would give the creek a straight run and would eliminate all trouble of the scouring out of the road and the flooding of the adjacent farms. The Rimu Show Committee held its final meeting on Tuesday night with a full attendance. The balance-sheet was presented by the secretary, Mr A. Cook, which showed a credit balance of some £3B after all accounts had been paid which is considered a . very successful effort for a small district. The president, Mr K. Henderson, thanked all for their co-operation and the secretary was instructed to write to the judges thanking them for their services. After business had been concluded the rest of the evening was spent in various games, a teams game of skittles, president v. secretary, resulting in the president’s team winning by 2 to 1. Supper was dispensed by the ladies, bringing an enjoyable evening to a close.
