BLUFF BOROUGH

GENERAL MEETING HELD. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Bluff Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening when his Worship the Mayor (the Rev. A. E. Waite) presided over the following: Councillors J. H. Doyle, A. C. McKillop, H. W. Newman, W. P. Butler, W. L. Johnston, O. F. Metzger. A letter was received from the Perpetual Trustees Company, Ltd, regarding the falling of a stone fence fronting Mr P. Georgeson’s property on Foyle street and suggesting that the damage was due to the cutting away of the footpath below the level of the bottom of the fence.—lt was decided ‘to inform the above that as the council had not cut away the footpath as suggested, it disclaimed responsibility in the matter. It was further decided to request the removal of the stone from the fence, as it was considered dangerous to pedestrian traffic. Mr H. Kingsland wrote drawing the council’s attention to damage done by blasting operations to the windows of his residence in Barrow street. —It was decided to have the damage repaired. Mr J. C. Thomson asked by letter if the council would give him a level of Parrett street opposite his dwelling, as he intended to erect a concrete fence before his property.—The matter was left in the hands of the Works Committee. A request was received from Messrs B. J. Macdonald, A. S. Morrison and J. McMillan that a footpath be formed fronting their properties in Walker street.—Referred to Works Committee. The Rev. W. W. Ewart wrote inviting the Mayor and council to a service in St. Matthews’ Church of England which would be attended by other local bodies.—lt was decided to accept the invitation, it being left with the Mayor to arrange a suitable date with Mr Ewart Councillor Newman drew attention to the state of the Flagstaff Road and stated that rain • water was cutting a channel in the centre of the road. It was decided to minimize the trouble by having the water ways cleaned out and to ask the Works Committee to furnish a< report on the general state of the road for consideration at next meeting of the council. Among the business carried through during the evening, was the consideration of the Mayor’s honorarium. It was decided to increase the latter by £lO from £75 per annum to £B5. The report submitted by the Town Clerk (Mr H. A. Ferguson) showed that receipt for the month totalled £646 7/9, and expenditure £1195 17/2. The report was approved and adopted, as were those of the Borough Electrical Engineer and other officers. Councillor Doyle Congratulated. Before the meeting concluded the

Mayor congratulated Councillor J. H. Dolye, on behalf of the council, on his Elevation to the position of Justice of the Peace. The honour was well deserved, his Worship said. It showed that Councillor Doyle had the confidence of his fellow citizens as well as of those in whose hands lay the making of the appointment. Councillor Doyle suitably replied.
