TUATAPERE NOTES

W.D.F.U.

The monthly meeting of the Tuatapere W.D.F.U. was presided over by Mrs Harrison.

Reports regarding the dressmaking classes conducted by the. Home Science Extension Service revealed that six or seven groups would be held in the Tuatapere district and that an organizing meeting would be held in Lawson’s Hall.

For arranging demonstrations for meetings it was decided to have district competition, with Mrs A. L. Whyte in charge of Te Tua and Te Waewae districts for the first three months, when another district will take its turn under its chosen leader, for a similar period. A prize will be given the most successful competitor at the end of the year. A very successful street day was conducted by Mrs D. Whyte and helpers towards the building fund. Mrs Bradley imported on having attended the Orawia branch’s birthdayparty and Mrs J. Young was appointed delegate to the executive annual meeting. At the annual meeting of the branch the following officers were appointed: President, secretary and treasurer as formerly, with vice-presidents, Mesdames H. Erskine, D. Whyte, J. W. Bradley and J. Young. Advisory members, Mesdames A. L. Whyte and R. Erskine.

A very hearty vote of thanks to Mrs J. Young for her help with the refreshments, also for donations of milk and firing was passed. The treasurer detailed the balancesheet whicli with the secretary’s report were adopted after reading, as follows.

“The past year, which has been successful considering no special effort was made for funds and most interesting regarding the branch’s activities, has proved helpful in many respects. The birthday party has been our chief source of revenue with a little from the afternoon tea collections and from Tui’s Annuals. Donations have been made to the Provincial Executive, the Ministering fund, Victoria Home, Plunket Society, petrol expenses for Waiau Branch, towards Mrs Barrer’s expenses to Honolulu, towards a prize at Invercargill summer show, parcels of clothing for those in need, literature for Waipiata sanatorium, Victoria Home, and hospitals, flowers and gifts for the sick, also letters of sympathy, and sick visits have been paid. An anonymous donor gave £1 for relief work. Premier bloom and monthly competitions for which small prizes were awarded and an aggregate prize at the end of the year was given. The following demonstrations and lectures have been enjoyed, stencilling (Mrs D. Whyte), paper flower making (Mrs Baker), practical work of the Blind Institute (Mr Johnston), dressmaking tuition, (Misses Johnston and Fogo). Home Science boxes have been studied. An organizing meeting regarding the formation of a girls’ club was held by Miss Crowe, Otago University, when Mesdames J. Young and J. Griffin were appointed supervisors. In connection with the educational week to be held in Invercargill in June, Misses M. Knowler and T. Erskine were balloted to attend. The provincial executive meetings were attended by Mesdames Harrison, H. Erskine, J. Griffin, J. Young, and Miss McEwan' who also was a delegate to Riverton branch. Mrs Harrison and members attended birthday parties at Fairfax, Thombury, Waiau and Invercargill. The sale of basket-ware on behalf of the Blind Institute realized £l5 and further orders continue to be attended to by Mrs D. Whyte who was in charge of the ptall.”
