MEN’S HOCKEY

ALL INDIA TEAM. SOUTH CANTERBURY BEATEN. (Per United Press Association.) Timaru, June 6. The Indian hockey team gave a brilliant display to-day in defeating South Canterbury by 12 goals to nil. At halftime the visitors led by three to nil. The Indians displayed wonderful team work, their positional play being outstanding. The home side battled gamely, but were unable to cope with the brilliance of the visiting forward line of which Dhyan Chand was the pivot. He scored six goals, Fernandes two, Shahabuddin two and Rup Singh two.

The visitors have been swarmed by autograph hunters during their stay, and it has been decided in future to charge sixpence for all autographs, books to be left with the manager. The money so collected will go to the Indian earthquake relief fund. UMPIRES FOR TO-MORROW. Civil Service No. 1 (Messrs L. Holmes and R. M. McLean); Queen’s Park, 1.45 p.m., Central v. Collegiate No. 1 (Messrs H. S. Cordery and G. Hope).
