“Sanders Of The River”
London Film Productions’ new film, “Sanders of the River” was recently presented at the Leicester Square Theatre, this gala world premiere being in aid of the “Newspaper Press Fund.” The picture, which is magnificently acted by a great cast, which includes Leslie Banks and Paul Robeson, is remarkable for its unique African sequences. Zoltan Korda, the director, and his production unit flew in special planes in order to make these sequences. Some 11,000 miles were covered by the unit, which consisted of fourteen Europeans, five lorries, five private cars, and over forty porters with three cameras and complete sound-recording apparatus. Extra personnel, film stock and equipment was sent by air from London to Entebee. A long trek, sometimes of over one hundred miles, was necessary to bring them to the location where the unit was working. The strange customs and dances of the primitive natives have been recorded. They are a tribe of remarkable physique who wear little or no clothes. These natives understood what was required of them and entered wholeheartedly into the spirit of these scenes. Altogether nearly 20,000 natives were used on the various locations. “Sanders of the River” was directed by Zolton Korda. The cast of this United Artists release includes Leslie Banks, Paul Robeson, Nina Mae McKinney, Robert Cochran and Joan Gardner.
