Last Term at Wembley’s.

THE ATHLETIC TEAM.

Chapter XVIII.

After thanking the boys, the head turned to the telephone and rang the police station. “The Sergeant is organizing a party now. You are to go to the station and accompany them. That is all,” said the head, putting the receiver down. After Tom and Smiler had retreated from the Head’s “den,” letting their feelings go with a will, they hurried to the station.

On reaching it they were shown to the police sergeant. “You boys, will at your own risk, accompany the party. If you succeed in capturing the thieves there will be £lO reward a-waiting you.” “Thank you sir.” A few minutes later they set off in a police car arriving there with about fifteen minutes to spare. Hiding behind cover in the ruins the police waited for the thieves to appear. Suddenly without any warning they came into sight, talking together behind a big rock. Slowly but surely the party crept up from all sides and soon had them surrounded. Then, at a given signal the police rushed forward. The thieves fought desperately and wildly; but in vain. Borne down by superior numbers the two thieves were captured. The sergeant was just going away when Tom, springing to his feet, accosted him. “Please sir there is a way that you could capture the pilot in the ’plane sir. One man could dress up in a theif’s clothes and attract the pilot. Then, when he landed and jumped out you could capture him.” “Bravo,” cried the sergeant. “O’Brien is just the man, I’ll fix it up now.” At six o’clock a plane circled overhead and landed. Perceiving what he thought was one of the thieves, the pilot walked over to where he was standing. But, just as the pilot strode out the police rushed out and before he could move the pilot, too, was captured. After having been sincerely congratulated, Tom and Smiler went back to school. * *

A few days later a list of Omoni’s representatives for the sports day was posted up. It read: Running events: Tom Newman, Smiler Blacton, Jack Johnstone, Colroy Steans. Field events: Newman, Robinson, Strunne, Ronnet, Benham and Stuck. Omoni’s, for the last ten years, had never won the Sports Cup, but this year they were determined to make a

good bid for it. They had two good athletes in Newman and Smiler. (To be continued.) —4 marks to Cousin Desmond Stone (13), 14 Morton road.
