SOUTH INVERCARGILL

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. ' •? At the monthly meeting of the South Invercargill Borough Council held last evening, his Worship the Mayor (Mr W. McChesney) presided over Councillors A. V. Hope, T. W. Richards, O. H. Paton, E. J. McNeil, G. H. Smith and C. M. Dickson. . • As this was the first meeting for the new year, seasonal greetings were exchanged-between Mayor and councillors.

The foreman of works (Mr J. A. McMillan) reported that during the past two months 140 chains of Kingswells Creek had been cleaned and some places widened, 56 yards of maintenance had been spread on several roads and 24 chains of asphalt paths had been repaired and topdressed. Surfacing on Stirratt and Walker streets and on Bluff and Elies roads had been carried out.' Regarding the Kingswell’s Creek planking on Boxall Road, the foreman recommended: “After having a discussion with the Mayor, I would recommend that the sides be battered, the planking removed and some depth taken up. I would not recommend the full depth to be taken up at present. Three power poles may require to be moved back.” The foreman’s recommendation was adopted, the Mayor remarking that the creek needed no deepening at present and would give sufficient outfall for drainage of land above where the planks were removed. “The men up there have been ‘kick-ing-up’ for more outfall. The Public Works engineer has maintained that they had any amount of outfall,” the Mayor added after the motion had been carried.

The Mayor mentioned that the borough had escaped the tidal flood, the water draining away well. The inspector of nuisances (Mr G. Nicol) reported that wandering stock, particularly young stock, had been fairly numerous. He drew attention to a dangerous hole in the road on Maher street, where a peat fire had undermined the gravel and caused it to fall away very nearly to the centre of the road.
