BLUFF REGATTA

FINAL MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE.

SUCCESSFUL SEASON.

(From Our Correspondent.) The final meeting of the Bluff Regatta Committee was held on Saturday evening when matters in connection with the annual regatta, held on January 1, were wound up. The chairman, Mr V. Metzger, presided over the following: Messrs A. E. Budd, G. Long, J. Forde, G. Niven, J. H, Drake, W. Johnson, C. Hunter, P. Smith, O. F. Metzger, T. West, C. Barry (secretary). The balance-sheet tabled by the secretary, showed that the past season’s working had resulted in a profit of approximately £64 for the one-day regatta. In discussing the balance-sheet, the chairman said that the result was very satisfactory. The fixture had been favoured with perfect weather which, of course, meant the difference between success and failure, and everything had passed off well. For rowing events £BB 10/- had been distributed as prize money, £53 for sailing races and £7 10/- for seine boat race, a total of £149. Last year had marked the diamond jubilee of the committee and a special effort had been made with a two-day regatta. For the present year it had been decided to revert to the single day and this, as already stated, had proved a success and the financial result, compared with the jubilee regatta takings over both days of £97 1/9, must be regarded as quite good. Mr Budd and others connected with the running of the tug had had a very strenuous day and the returns from the Harbour Board’s vessel had helped the committee’s funds considerably. The balance-sheet was approved and adopted. . , . x. A letter was received from the Southland Provincial Yacht and Motor Boat Association asking for a donation in connection with the Sanders Cup races. It was decided to donate £5 5/to the association, and to forward the suggestion that Bluff’s claims be considered when next it was decided to hold Sanders Cup races in Southland. The work of the St. John Ambulance Brigade on regatta days was favourably commented on, and it was agreed to donate a guinea to the brigade’s funds, the secretary being instructed to write conveying the committee’s appreciation of the brigades assistance. , Before the meeting concluded the chairman thanked members for the way they had carried out their duties on regatta day and for their regular attendances at meetings. A very interest had been shown by all and the programme had been carried out expeditiously and satisfactorily. In this regard, the speaker said, he took great pleasure in receiving congratulations on the running of the regatta from Captain Watson, of the steamer Waikouaiti, who had asked him to convey the same to the committee. Captain Watson had spoken admiringly of the committees work and had also passed the opinion that Bluff harbour provided an ideal expanse of water for sailing events. Naturally the opinion of a skipper with Captain Watson’s ' experience was worthy of consideration and it was pleasing to note that when his remarks appeared in the Southland Times they had been endorsed in the speakers hearing by several men with wide

knowledge of sailing. Continuing, Mr Metzger paid a tribute to Mr Barry’s work as secretary. During his (the speaker’s) long connection with the Regatta Committee he had been associated with five very able secretaries, namely Messrs McClure, Parker, Stevenson, McDonald and Barry, and it could truthfully be said the last-named was worthily carrying on the good work in succession to the first four in a position that demanded considerable ability. The chairman concluded by expressing the hope that the next regatta would be equally as successful as that held on last New Year’s Day.
