SOUTHLAND REGIMENT.

TRAINING AT FAIRLIGHT.

The First Battalion of the Southland Regiment commenced their annual camp on Friday at Fairlight. The site is an ideal one situated on Mr J. Gordon's property in a bend of the Mataura River and flanked by willows. For several days prior to the arrival of the main body, an advance party was busy with preparations and soon an extensive canvas town appeared in the picturesque valley. Colonel E. F. Selby, M.C., V.D., is in command, with Major T. Matthews as second-in-command. Captain J. A. Moore N.Z.S.C., is Staff-officer, while Lieutenant A. Cockerill, D. 5.0., is Adjutant.

A comprehensive syllabus is in operation, including physical training, antiaircraft instruction, field-firing of mortars, machine-guns, rifles and Lewis guns, all with the view-of working up to a tactical scheme at the end of the course. The social side has not been neglected, and committees have been formed to arrange entertainments and sports, a shooting match with the Garston Rifle Club resulting as follows:— Territorials.
