FAULTY WORK

SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION. UNDER-SECRETARY INDIGNANT. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, January 26. The secretary of the Wellington Builders and General Labourers’ Union, Mr P. M. Butler, who is a member of the Wellington City Council, in cricitizing the Wellington Education Board for withholding the name of the contractor mentioned in connection with the faulty construction work, says that considering the results of the Napier earthquake and in view of the fact that this is generally now accepted as an earthquake country, gross negligence of this type cannot be too closely sheeted home, and the board should carefully consider its own position and obvious duty. Mr Butler said it was amazing to learn from the report of the meeting of the board that it was to allow the contractor to continue with the work, providing he made certain alterations. Surely such a course would invite trouble. A thorough investigation of all phases of the building industry was not only necessary, but overdue. It was a duty the Government owed the people. A working code should be enacted which should embody the establishment of effective control.
