REV. A. L. MILLAR AND MRS MILLAR FAREWELLED. There was a large and representative gathering at the farewell social tendered the Rev. A. L. Millar, Mrs Millar and Miss Jean Millar in the Oreti Hall on Wednesday. Mr Millar has been minister of the Presbyterian Church at Oreti during the past four years and has received a call to Balclutha, for which town he leaves shortly, states the Winton Record. The departing guests were the recipients of handsome presentations, and the glowing tributes of the various speakeis were ample testimony to the high esteem and popularity in which Mr and Mrs Millar and Miss Millar are held in the Oreti and neighbouring districts. As secretary of the Winton and district dental clinic committee during the last three years, Mr Millar also received a presentation from that body as a token of appreciation of his valuable services. Earlier in the week the Oreti branch of the P.W.M.U. and the parishioners of Drummond also tendered functions to the guests of honour. The Rev. Cawley, Centre Bush, presided, and briefly extended a welcome to all present. The evening was interspersed with musical items. The Oreti Church choir was responsible for several numbers, while quartettes were given by Misses J. Findlay, M. Findlay, Messrs J. Pickley and A. Findlay, solos by Miss Woods and duets by Mr arid Mrs Dyke. At a suitable interval the opportunity was taken by Mr James Findlay, on behalf of the congregation, to present the Rev. and Mrs Millar with a roll of notes. Mr Findlay expressed deep regret at their guests’ departure and spoke of Mr Millar’s splendid work in the parish. With their removal to Balclutha, they would carry with them the community’s wishes for a happy and successful future. Mr T. R. McLean endorsed Mr Findlay’s remarks and mentioned Mr Millar’s activities outside the church work, his services being always readily given. The Revs. Cawley (Centre Bush), Johnson (Dipton), Mitchell (Isla Bank) and Miss Fleming, superintendent of the Heddon Bush Sunday School, also added their felicitations.

Mr T. Middleton, on behalf of the Dental Clinic Committee, asked Mr Millar to accept a handsome travelling rug, as a slight recognition of his splendid work while on behalf of the Heddon Bush Sunday School, Miss Freda Heenan and Master L. Dyke presented Mrs Millar with a bouquet, and a crystal jug and goblets respectively. Miss Jean Millar was also presented by Miss Heenan with a cup, saucer and plate.

Miss O’Neill and Miss Moira O’Neill, Jed street, have returned from a holiday in Dunedin. Miss Moss has returned to Birchwood, after spending two weeks’ holiday in Dunedin. Mrs E. K. Mills, Beatrice street, returned from the North Island by Thursday night’s express. Mrs R. G. Christophers, of Wellington, is the guest of Mrs C. F. Hackworth, Spey street. Mrs F. The Oreti Busy Bees were next to show their appreciation, Miss C. Barker presenting Mrs Millar with a crystal salad bowl, while Miss Myra Ford presented Miss Millar with a cup, saucer and plate. Mr Millar, in reply, voiced his sincere appreciation of the many gifts they had received, and most of all they appreciated the kindly sentiments underlying the presentations. During his association with the district, he, himself, and his wife and daughter had valued highly the goodwill and cooperation of parishioners and residents generally. They regretted leaving their many friends, but they would always have sincere and happy recollections of the Oretic and district people. Mrs Millar also replied. On Monday evening the Oreti P.W.M.U., at a happy function, presented Mrs Millar with a crystal rose bowl, while on Friday evening parishioners of Drummond made presentations of a silk umbrella to Mrs Millar, a walking stick to Mr Millar and a leather handbag to Miss Jean Millar.
