OTAHUTI NOTES

PERSONAL ITEMS. (From Our Correspondent.) Mrs T. F. Grieve has returned to Balclutha with her sister Mrs W. Cochrane and family, who have been staying with her for the past week or so. Mrs Grieve intends visiting old friends in Dunedin also. Mr and Mrs K. McKinnon have been the guests of Mr A. McKenzie, Mains O’Blair early in the week. Miss Margaret Sim is to be stationed as assistant school teacher at Makarewa this year. The Wrights Bush cricket eleven journeyed to the local district to play a friendly match with the local amateurs on Sims’ reserve. A large number of local and surrounding district residents were present. The match ended in a draw. Charlie Donald topped the local scoring, while W. Connell gave a creditable performance for Wrights Bush. After the match Mrs Sim provided supper, after which a social wr : held. Last Friday evening a meeting was called to try and form a cricket club in the district. About 40 members were present. Mr R. Sim was elected as chairman, with J. Young and E. Sim joint secretaries. A social committee was drawn up to arrange entertainments during the coming months. Four selectors, umpires and scorers were also arranged for. It is the intention to enter into the competition next year. Official practice nights were set down for Monday and Thursday nights, weather permitting. Mr R. Sim was also elected club captain. Mr Sim is to be thanked for offering his suitable paddock for a cricket reserve. Arrangements were also made for catering for visiting teams. The local married men challenged the single men on Friday night last to a game of cricket on the local reserve. The married men chose to bat and after scoring 50 runs for eight wickets they declared, leaving the single men three-quarters of an hour before stumps were drawn. James Cochrane topped ths married men’s score with 17. Whei. stumps were drawn the single men had scored 104 for five wickets, the highest scorers being G. Grieve 53, J. Young not out 19 J. Forde not out 14. A return match is likely to take place next week. Mrs Sim, aided by Mrs S Bux-ton-again provided supper. Mr W. Young, on behalf of those present, thanked the two ladies,
