CORRESPONDENCE

WAIHOPAI EMBANKMENT. To the Editor. Sir,—ln reading a report contained in your paper of Thursday’s date, the Mayor is reported to have stated “People buy sections on low-lying ground and then come along and expect this council to shoulder the burden and protect f;em by embankments. It is not a fair thing.” I would like to point out to this gentleman that the people who purchased sections in Collingwood, did so many years ago and it is only since the council’s action in reclaiming land south of the Railway Bridge that the Collingwood and Prestonville settlers have suffered with such heavy floods, confirmation of this needs no imagination as no persons in their sober senses would think of building at the present time in this locality now that, the land is subject to such violent visitations; but when they did build years ago this land was free from floods and was looked upon as an excellent residential portion of the town.- -I am, etc. COLLINGWOOD RATEPAYER.
