Wellington. Timaru, Bluff, and Port Chalmers. The Imperial Star is one of three sister ships ordered by the company for the. carriage of produce from New Zealand and Australia to Great Britain. The other two vessels' are the New Zealand Star, and the Australian Star. All are of about ’ 10,670 tons gross. ' MISHAP TO NARBADA. When swinging round in the Hooghly River shortly after leaving Calcutta for New Zealand, the Narbada, due at Lyttelton to-morrow, struck a large, mooring buoy, the anchor chain of which became entwined round the Narbada’s starboard propeller. A river vessel, conveying natives was made fast to the buoy at the time and the small craft was pushed aside out did not capsize. The fast-revolving propeller fouled the chain, which twisted round the shaft and stopped the engine. The xnetal buoy, about 20 feet in diameter, was half submerged under the ship’s counter. With the aid of tugs and using the ships port engine, which was not affected, efforts were made to clear the tangled propeller without result. A large lighter specially equipped for tending the moorings in the river, was summoned from Calcutta, and after many hours' work the buoy was turned over, unshackled and the chain freed. The starboard engine is stated to have refused to, work at first, and it was feared that it had been

seriously damaged. The ship returned to Calcutta and entered the dock, where divers made an examination. It was reported that little damage had been done to the propeller, and as the engine had since been set going, IF was decided to continue the voyage and dock in New Zealand after the cargo had been discharged. At the time of the mishap the Narbada was in charge of one of the Hooghly River pilots. This pilot service is noted as one of the few in the world where a pilot is in supreme command of a vessel, the captain not having power to over-rule his decisions should the occasion arise.
