NATIONAL GATHERING. COMPETITION RESULTS. (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, January 24. The gross takings for the two-day season of the National Flower Show totalled £423 18/6. At this morning’s conference of the Dominion Horticultural Trades Association the results of the florists’ slogan competition, open to primary school children, were announced as under: Pat Ralph (Upper Moutere, Nelson) 1 and 2, Eric Murphy (Pahautanui) 3. The winners of the committee’s medals for the best members’ displays at the National Show were: Graiger and King (Timaru), Skene’s (Dunedin). Moncrieff Stewart (Dunedin) and T. Y. Turner (Dunedin). It was resolved to recommend that the next conference be held at Auckland. ANNUAL MEETING INSTITUTE OF HORTICULTURE. (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, January 24. At the annual meeting of the Institute of Horticulture to-day, Mr F. J. Nathan was unanimously re-elected president of the Institute for the ensuing year, and with the addition of Mr J. A. McPherson (Canterbury), the following vice-presidents were re-elected: Messrs F. L. Lancaster (Auckland), F. E. Smith (Hawkes Bay), J. G. McKenzie (Wellington), P. Black (Palmerston North), T. Rigg (Nelson) and D. Tannock (Otago) and Sir Robert Anderson (Southland). The following executive committee was elected: Mrs Knox Gilmer, Professor H. B. Kirk, Messrs J. A. Campbell, T. Waugh, H. Baillie, W. R. B. Oliver, F. S. Pope, W. C. Hyde, W. T. Goodwin, W. S. Mason, G. A. Green, B. C. Aston, L. C. Brash, A. H. Cockayne, H. J. Poole, and F. J. Shanks. The conference passed the following remit unanimously: “That the institute express its appreciation to the Governor-General (Lord Bledisloe) for his splendid services towards the advancement of horticulture and forestry during his term of office.”

The executive was instructed to make every endeavour to have copies of Lord Bledisloe’s address at the Arbour Day commemoration of Wellington College and also his speech to the Forestry League circulated among members. Mr G. Mackenzie (Wellington) said that if they lived to be 100 they would probably never see a Governor-Gen-eral who would deliver such an inspiring and informative address. A ballot in connection with the election of honorary fellows resulted as follows: Mr C. S. Longuet (Invercargill) and Dr. J. G. Willis (London) and Sir Frederick Moore (Dublin) as overseas fellows. It was decided that the executive give consideration to the advisability of establishing a prize or a scholarship to be known as the Dr. Leonard Cockayne Memorial Prize to be competed for annually among W.D.H. (New Zealand) candidates or among traisioes in horticulture. The executive was also instructed to go into the question of making available further institute challenge cups for competition at horticultural shows. LODER CUP AWARD TO LORD BLEDISLOE. (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, January 24. Wider conditions than mere exhibition were outliried to-day to the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture for the award of the Loder Cup, given for the encouragement, cultivation and preservation of New Zealand Flora, and it was announced that the first to be awarded this honour under the new conditions would be the GovernorGeneral (Lord Bledisloe).
