OTAUTAU NOTES

R.S.A. (From Our Correspondent) The monthly meeting of the Otautau branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Monday evening. Mr W. Sadlier (president) occupied the chair. A motion of sympathy with Mr J. T. Clark, a member, in the recent loss of his brother, was passed. It was decided to forward capitation fees on the remaining members’ subscriptions collected to Invercargill, making the total of 70 members of the branch.

The secretary was directed to forward a letter of thanks to the Invercargill Association for its Christmas parcel of tinned fruit and plum pudding, and also to advise that the local branch had paid a subsidy and distributed Christmas cheer to 47 children. A special vote of thanks was passed to Mr*G. Williams for his assistance in raising funds toward this object. The provincial executive forwarded a letter of appreciation of the action of the Otautau members in forwarding a gift of the volume of “A Photographic History of the First World War” for inclusion in the club-room library. Owing to his early departure for Gore the president (Mr Sadlier) tendered his resignation. He thanked members for their assistance, and stated that he had acted as secretary since the inception of the association and had acted for a term as president. He had been proud of the progress of the branch, the membership of which had increased from 30 to 70. Members spoke in appreciative terms of the services Mr Sadlier had rendered to the association, and asked that he hold office until the annual meeting. They also congratulated him on his appointment. Tennis. The B grade match in the Western District competition between Otautau and Waimatuku was played on the Otautau courts on Wednesday. A strong wind was blowing, which interfered materially with the play. The visitors recorded a win by 11 sets (102 games) to five sets (72 games). At the last meeting of the Otautau River Board additional dredging work on the Wairio creek on the property of Mrs B. M. Dahlenburg was authorized, and Messrs Shave Bros, have been appointed to carry out the work. The dredging work on the main Otautau stream has been carried on past the Waikouro-Merrivale road, where a substantial bridge has been erected by Mr D. Clark.
