WIDOW IMPRISONED

CHARGES OF THEFT. MAGISTRATE’S SUGGESTION. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, January 23. A sentence of twelve months’ imprisonment was imposed on Ellen Marion Mather, a widow, aged 32, in the Magistrate’s Court to-day after a trial on 27 charges of theft. Two charges were in respect of bicycles and the remaining 25 of alleged theft of goods from city shops. The accused was convicted on 16 charges, 11 being dismissed or withdrawn. During the hearing the Magistrate, Mr E. D. Mosley, suggested that if shopkeepers kept a record of the description and price of goods which they missed from the stocks they would considerably help themselves and the courts.
