TWO NEW DIRECT RECORDS. The Ruapehu, owned by the New Zealand Shipping Company, eclipsed all previous records by making the trip between Lyttelton and England In 37 days. She left Lyttelton on November 27, 1884, and arrived Home on January 3. 1885. This included two stoppages, one at Rio and one at Madiera. As the actual steaming time of the previous record holder, the Doric, was 37 days 11 hours, and her full time was about 40 days, the Ruapehu had made the voyage in something like three days less than the fastest previous time. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Tongariro, under Captain Bone, arrived in Wellington Harbour at 11 p.m. on January 4, 1885, having made the smartest run on record from Plymouth to Wellington. Her steaming time was 41 days 3 hours. She was a sister ship to the Aorangi, and had not previously visited this port. Her average speed for the trip was 13 knots. . , "We doubt whether any port in New Zealand has ever before accommodated at the same time such a magnificent mercantile steam fleet.” said the Wellington Evening Post on January 5, 1885. There were on that date 18 steamers in port, with a nett aggregate tonnage of 11.283. Among these were the direct liners Arawa and Tongariro. and the Union Company’s Manapouri, Wakatipu. Hauroto, and Rotorua. The five ocean-going sailing-ships in port represented 4040 tons nett, and there were many coasters besides. , . , „, The Ohau and Taupo, sister ships, building for the Union Company, were said by The Post’s London correspondent to be nearly ready for sea. They were being built by Messrs William Denny Bros., and were of about 740 tons, their dimensions being 200 ft by 32ft by 16ft 31n. Another contract had been made for a large steamer, the dimensions of which were the largest yet considered by the company. She was to be 320 ft by 42ft by 26ft, with a gross tonnage of 2500 and accommodation for at least 150 first-class and 120 second-class passengers. Powerful three-cylinder tripleexpansion engines were installed, and she was to be launched at the end of July. 1885. WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE.
