IN TOWN AND OUT

NEWS OF THE DAY Rare Lightning Flashes. From about 8.30 last evening lightning flashes of particular brilliancy and at times of rare beauty were to be seen in the north-west. Later in the evening these flashes were followed by thunder. * * 'Nuf Scd. A larger number of motorists than usual travelled down to Bluff yesterday for the departure of the Maheno for Melbourne and the comments of many upon the state of the road from Invercargill to the port town—always a bone of contention—could hardly be reduced to print. ♦ * * *

Mataura Borough Council. With the municipal elections some three months off, enrolments for the municipal electors’ roll are being steadily received by the Town Clerk. Rumour hath it that there are likely to be several new aspirants for municipal honours at the forthcoming poll. It is also understood that one citizen has had representations made to him with a view to his contesting* the mayoralty. Kilties Band Gala.

The gross financial result of the gala held in the Mataura Recreation Grounds on Saturday afternoon last has been a source of gratification to the executive responsible for promoting the function, and it is confidently anticipated that the net return will go a long way towards the object in view. The various competitions held were finalized on Saturday, when the following winners were announced: Guess weight of sheep (Mr W. T. Parker); chocolates (Miss I. Clearwater and Mrs W. T. Richmond); dinner (Messrs A. Osborne, J. Hewlett, R. McAllister and H. McCallum) equal. * ♦ * * The Round Trip.

Among the passengers who sailed by the Maheno from Bluff last night were three Dunedinites who intend making the round trip—to Milford by boat and then back to Lumsden over the famous Track. “The Union Company could give us no actual guarantee we would be able to land at Milford, but they said it was only one chance in a thousand that we would not,” one of the trie told a Times reporter. “So you see we may have to go on _ to. Melbourne, but we are optimistic in the meantime. We wanted to do the round trip to save redoubling our tracks and the Maheno is the only boat that can take us round the coast to the Sound,” she added.

Machinery for Paper Mill at Mataura.

Special interest was attached to the arrival of the S.S. Opawa at Bluff yesterday as the heavy machinery for installation at the paper mills at. Mataura is aboard. Pieces of machinery of various weights comprise the consignment, the largest one being in the vicinity of 40 tons weight. Transport of this has given the management much concern, the Railway department having provided a specially strengthened truck for carriage of the piece to East Gore, whence it will be unloaded and transported to Mataura via the east side of the river. In this connection, too, it has been found necessary to strengthen the bridges en route to ensure safe transit. It is understood that some of the smaller pieces of machinery will be railed to Mataura and unloaded there. Altogether considerable local interest is aroused by the arrival of the vessel.
