A HAPPY DAY

TRADES PICNICS BY SEA AND RIVER. SHOP FOLK AT PLAY. As if realizing that on it rested the fate of the annual trades picnics, yesterday dawned bright and sunny. This generosity was exploited to the full by the shopkeepers and their employees and the city suffered a general exodus. Many and varied were the locations chosen—some favouring the beach and others river or stream—but all were agreed that the day in the open had been as happy and joyous as a holiday fixture should. Reports of the different gatherings are as follows:— MESSRS H. AND J. SMITH Seeking a pleasure resort somewhere off the beaten track, the staff of Messrs H. and J. Smith journeyed to Wakapatu, a small beach in the vicinity of Round Hill. Their rendezvous proved the happiest of choices. An undisturbed beauty spot, Wakapatu has all that the picnicker could desire and the staff of Messrs H. and J. Smith felt that their enterprise in journeying to such a spot had been well rewarded. MESSRS HERBERT, HAYNES AND CO. The beauties of the Tuatapere Domain drew the staff of Messrs Herbert Haynes and Co. yesterday, and their picnic was held on the banks of the Waiau. Weather conditions were all that could be desired, and the day was spent enjoying to the full the many attractions the domain had to offer. A special feature of the day was a friendly match between the staff and members of the Tuatapere Cricket Club, resulting in a drawn game. That ever popular holiday resort, the Riverton Rocks, was chosen by the staff and friends of Messrs Thomson and Beattie for their annual picnic. A rather strong wind could not temper the enjoyment of the holidaymakers and the time was pleasantly spent in hiking, swimming, and the playing of games.
