WINTON NOTES

R.S.A. PICNIC. (From Our Correspondent.) For some time past the annual picnic ‘of the Winton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association has been eagerly awaited by the younger fry and older people alike, and what would have been an outstandingly successful gathering was marred somewhat by rain. Close on two hundred adults and children forgathered at “The Willows,” and although, unfortunately light rain continued for the greater part of the day, nevertheless a most happy time was spent. Most commendable improvement had been carried out on the riverside and in the vicinity, by those responsible for arrangements, and these added greatly to the enjoyment of the outing. Underneath the towering willow trees, the undergrowth had been cleared sufficiently to allow of races to be run, while at the river-bank entrance to a fine pool, slips were cut and a divingboard erected. From tall branches were suspended swings for infants, and a large bonfire gave warmth to the bathers after their exhilarating plunges. In the vicinity of the gravel beach, coppers gave forth an ample supply of hot water for tea preparations. The programme of entertainment was a varied one, and included swimming, diving and running events, treasure-hunts, and children’s bun-eating competitions.
