DEATH OF BATHER
SITING BY BLUE-BOTTLE.
CAUSE OF SEVERE PAIN.
An Italian cane farmer, Salvatore Cantarella, of Lower Tully, Queensland, died recently after being stung by a Portuguese man-o’-war (blue-bottle) while he was bathing at Coogarra Beach, about 14 miles from Tully. In apparent agony Cantarella cried loudly for help, and companions helped him ashore. Tentacle marks were noticed on his body. First-aid was given immediately, including restorative methods for drowning, when Cantarella lapsed into unconsciousness. Cantarella was taken to Tully, but died during the journey. Local authorities are of the opinion that death was not caused by the attack of the Portuguese man-o’-war, but by a secondary or supplementary cause, such as exhaustion and drowning, the victim being deprived from exercising the functions of swimming and selfpreservation owing to the agony of the attack. The Portuguese man-o-war is found all along the Queensland coast, and in other countries, including Europe. Some have tentacles up to 12ft long.
