FINE OF £3O

LAYING DOUBLES. PENALTY FOR BOOKMAKER. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, January 22. Fourteen people who took doubles with Thomas Fisher on horses running at Trentham to-day may be doubly disappointed, for Fisher was arrested last night and in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, he confessed that he had been carrying on the business of bookmaking. Twenty-six nom-de-plumes were found on him and the police also found the 14 doubles mentioned. He was convicted by Mr E. Page, S.M., and fined £3O, to be paid within a month.

It was stated that to the knowledge of the police the accused since 1932 had been consistently carrying on the business of bookmaking at the Forresters’ Arms Hotel. It was also stated that apparently Fisher had fallen on bad times lately, and was down and out so far as finances were concerned.
