CIVIL SERVICE

EFFORT TO IMPROVE STANDARD. ADMISSION OF UNIVERSITY GRADUATES. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, January 22. That a strong case exists for an effort to improve the standards in the New Zealand civil service by the admission of university graduates was the opinion expressed by some members at the meeting of the Senate of the University of New Zealand to-day. It was stated during the debate that although civil servants were encouraged to study for degrees, the best students leaving the university were full time students who would not complete their course till they were 21 to 24 years of age, when it was not possible for them to enter the service, except as specialists. In such positions they would have no opportunity of attaining the higher administrative posts. The executive was empowered to make representations to the Government.
