A river, . <s Whose clear; cool depths Harbour swift, darting fish, And on whose brink, Waist-high, golden and purple iris grow And reeds whisper and shiver together. In sheltered sunflecked pools on either bank Frail water-lilies float, like stars ■■ .~ — i Fallen from grace k" . In-Heaven. ,' Or here, mayhap, a willow, Sunlight slanting through the .'quivering ‘-leaVefe'-'";• ■■ Leaning, Narcissus-like, above the water. 1 And over all a clear, high dome of blue Flecked o’er with lazy clouds, endlessly drifting. - ' A breeze comes dancing up the river, Stirs all the leaves and makes the nishes quiver. Sets all in motion. . . . and then dies away. —M. A. Smith in the ‘‘Blue Peter.” SOMEWHERE IN THE TROPICS. "Anchor clear, sir.” ■ The engines are run on to half speed, and we swing round to seaward. It is good to feel the throb.' Two dr three darkskinned men in their canoes wave their paddles, and the little wooden pier soon fades into the background. The noisy, cheerful natives in their gay cottons, become specks of colour and then disappear. The white men, to-night, mopping their brows as they enter the club, will be cheerful enough, too but for all the moonlight and the palms, the bougainvillea, and the cannas, they know that they are exiles, and the chief satisfaction of each homeward mail as it goes is that it brings nearer the all-important one. We are up to the lighthouse now, and the ship lifts and curtsies to the open sea. A beautiful night it is. Behind the dazzling white lighthouse on the green headland, palms sway like plumed courtiers towards a queen, the sky overhead a hazy blue, and the sea a deeper blue flecked with white. But scarce a mile away there is a reef just below the surface, and upon the reef is a wreck. Though she has been there several years she looks almost sound from here with her foremast and funnel in place. A heavy list to port, it’s true, yet so has many an honest freighter. There she lies, a sad symbolism headed for home, but stranded. —M.F. WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE.
