MIDNIGHT BATTLE

SMUGGLERS AND CUSTOMS

OFFICERS.

(United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 10.55 p.m.) Belfast, January 21. Many shots were exchanged in a midnight battle at Clogher, near the Free State border, when 10 masked smugglers attempted to recapture 100 cattle which the Customs had seized and impounded. The raiders, while rounding up the cattle, disturbed the guards. The shooting stampeded the cattle, upon which the raiders fled across the border. Squads of Customs police were called out, but were too late except to round up the animals again. _____________
