Rain driven by a hard northerly wind fell in Auckland yesterday afternoon and was sufficient to mar the enjoyment of the day. This morning it rained steadily for several hours, but at mid-day the rain had ceased and the sky brightened. SPORTS ABANDONED FALL AT WANGANUI. (Per United Press Association.) Wanganui, January 2. Heavy rain, punctuated with thunder and vivid lightning, continued at intervals to-day. All sports were abandoned and many campers in tents were flooded out. TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR POSITION IN TARANAKI. (Per United Press Association.) New Plymouth, January 2. After two months of almost unbroken drought, torrential rain fell throughout Taranaki yesterday. The rivers were in full summer flood, carrying abnormal quantities of driftwood. Many New Year sports fixtures were abandoned. The fall in 24 hours up to the morning was 170 points. DRY SPELL BROKEN RAIN IN PALMERSTON NORTH. (Per United Press Association.) Palmerston North, January 2. The lengthy dry spell was broken late yesterday afternoon by unexpected heavy rain which surprised picnic parties and interrupted sports fixtures. Changed conditions followed a temperature of 88 in the shade. By 9 a.m. to-day nearly an inch of rain had fallen. The weather is still very unsettled and rain is again falling. The resumption of the Hawke Cup cricket match was delayed till noon. The Bowling Centre’s tourney was similarly delayed. GOLD-MINING RESUMED SPORTS BODIES UNFORTUNATE. (Per United Press Association.) Westport, January 2. Following on heavy rain, gold-mining activities, which had been held up during the drought, were renewed today, though sports bodies did not welcome the rain.
