Nurses’ Annual Dinner
The sixth annual dinner of the Southland branch of the New Zealand Registered Nurses’ Association was held in the Rosewood on Thursday, December 6, eighty-two members being present.
The president, Miss G. Stubbs, presided, and welcomed thirteen new members to the association, all of whom were presented with bouquets. The toast of “The King” being duly honoured, Miss Ross proposed the toast of “The President,” and Mrs Hemmings presented Miss Stubbs with a beautiful spray of flowers. The toast list concluded with one to “the new members” proposed by Miss G. Stubbs and replied to by Miss Gerrard.
Following dinner the guests adjourned to the lounge where a very pleasant evening was spent renewing friendships and incidentally recalling many incidents of the past which occurred when many present worked together in a common cause. Songs were sung by Mrs Ferguson, Miss Gerrard, Miss Kohn and Mrs Hicks (Bluff), Mrs Mamey acting as accompanist. Besides the president, Miss G. Stubbs, who was supported by the vice-presi-dents, Mesdames Wood and Hemmings and Miss Ross, the following were present: Military nurses: Mesdames Hemmings, White, Pottinger, James Hargest, Wood, Muir, Barclay, A. Owen Johnston, McCurdy (Dipton), Fathers (Winton), Misses Jeffreys (Dunedin), Scott (Mataura), Porteous (Gore), Ayson and Rhind. Others present were: Mesdames Marshall, Mills, McCrostie, Sheehan, Maffin, Hill, R. Wilson'; Simon, R. Brown, Saunders, W. Brown, Gudgson, Swan, Spiers, Francis, Meredith, Campbell, Whitehead, Riddle, R. Hanan, I. Jack, Hawke, Sinclair, McDowell, R. White, Buxton, Hicks and Ferguson; Misses F. Stubbs, W. Smith, Keppell, Dawson, Gerrard, Warring, Burnett, G. Porteous, Young, Wilson, Fox, Hume, Clapp, A. M. Smith, B. Thomson, Stevenson, Kohn (Wellington), Smith, Wilkes, Buckingham, Sparkes, Kerr, Mclntyre, McKinnon, Ingold, Watts. Kerse, Finlayson, Griffiths, Matthews, Pay, Hilliard, Wright, Fallow, Bell and McNaught.
Mrs W. R. Harris, Albert street, visited Ohai for a few days last week. Miss L. Cartwright, Timaru, is the guest of Mrs F. G. Hall-Jones, “Lennel,” Gladstone. Mrs J. B. Norris, jun., has returned to Christchurch from a holiday at Stewart Island. Miss M. O’Byrne, Dalrymple Road, returned during the week from a yisit to Mount Cook. Mr and Mrs R. C. Stewart, Swinton street, leave for Wellington by the express this morning.
