Letter to Kitty
My dear Kitty, Fashion says buttons, buttons, and yet more buttons! You positively must have them, my dear, if you want to be smart. They may be used to fasten, or simply as a decoration, but in either case they are much in evidence. You must be exotic with your buttons, Kitty —metal ones are popular, and the more unusual their shape the more fashionable they are. Wooden ones, painted gay colours, are an attractive addition to the summer frock for more dressy occasions, lovely buttons of glass—plain or coloured—can be obtained, and an unusual innovation is the mirror button.
Belts are important too, Kitty. They need not go all the way round; if you like you may have your summer coat belted across the back and not at the front. Your belts must be wide, and white is the favourite summer colour. Choose one of washable material, my dear, because white soils so quickly and a grimy belt will not enhance the beauty of your summer outfit. Skirts are definitely shorter, my dear. Your dinner frock must show your ankles, and your house frocks and street clothes must show at least twelve inches of you. leg. Evening frocks no longer have long trains—there are some shorter ones still though—and they are made of exotic materials such as lame, cellophane and tissue. One famous designer has evolved a creation of glass—rather nerve-wracking to wear don’t you think, Kitty? Trimming is practically nil these days, Kitty, but the importance of accessories is just as great as it has ever been. Don’t, whatever you do, buy an expensive ensemble then “make do” with your gloves, handbag, etc. Those little oddments are the secret of true smartness, Kitty, so don’t ignore them. Love, JANE.
