WAIMATUKU NOTES

W.D.F.U. SOCIAL. (From Our Correspondent.) A most enjoyable afternoon was spent in the hall on Wednesday afternoon when the Thombury and Wrights Bush branches of the W.D.F.U. held a combined meeting and social afternoon. After the branches had concluded their business they combined for the social part of the afternoon. A chorus was sung by the following members of the Thombury branch; Mesdames Rance, Anderson, P. Lindsay, J. Buchanan, Evans, D. Buchanan, Hayes and McLean, while a duet was given by Mesdames Hayes and Rance. A short sketch entitled “Mrs Tggins and the Plumber” was given by th. following members of the Wrights Bush branch: Mrs Tggins—Mrs W. Buchanan; Pansy— Mrs M. Cahill; Mrs ’Arris—Mrs A. Anderson; The Plumber—Mrs G. Galt. Competitions were held during the afternoon and were won by Mesdames Fraser Fallow and McDonald. A stall containing basketwork from the “Institute of the Blind,” Auckland, was very successful, practically everything being sold, besides orders being taken for more.

On Wednesday a most enjoyable and instructive evening was held at the local tennis courts, when Messrs A. J. Deaker, L. T. Cockerill and H. K. Sumpter, of the Invercargill Club, and Mr D. Stevens, of the Waihopai Club, travelled to Waimatuku ;nd played several exhibition matches, after which Messrs Sumpter and Deaker addressed those present on the chief points of how to play tennis. The various strokes and positions were all demonstrated, while the common faults with new players were also pointed out. At the conclusion of the addresses Mr J. Worthington (president of the Waimatuku Club) moved a hearty vote of thanks to the players for coming to a small club like Waimatuku, and said how much it was appreciated. Members were also present from Thombury and Wrights Bush Clubs, all enjoying a most instructtive evening’s tennis.
